Yesterday, I went on my first proper training walk. I know! I'm late. But what I lack in punctuality I make up for in enthusiasm. :)
I walked approximately four miles in the neighborhood around my home, which included two notable climbs (according to my knees) and a goodly portion of flat sidewalks. I admit it -- I got tired. By the last half mile, the insides of my quads were displeased with me. I stopped to stretch on a curb close to home (the second climb still ahead of me), and I stretched when I got home.
Even with all the stretching, I had a feeling I'd be hobbling today. In my medicine cabinet, however, is a lovely (odor-free!) ointment that helped revive my poor aching legs. My chiropractor had recommended Traumeel for healing bruises, but it works on most aches that don't involve open wounds. It's a natural external pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, and I used it on the sorest spots before I went to bed. Today, the only muscles that hurt are the ones I skipped.
I don't think I'll need this trick for very long, but while I'm acclimating my winter body to this training process, it's certainly going to come in handy! And you can bet it will be in my pack for the event.
Another homeopathic option is Arnica. Both ointments are sold at Whole Foods, My Organic Market, and Back to Health (my chiropractor) and Cash Grocer (I think) in Alexandria.

I have absolutely NO idea if I'm posting this Blog or not...we'll see:)
I'm getting REALLY nervous about this 39 mile walk. My training, so far, rather sucks (are we allowed to say that on a Blog?). My get up and go is dead.
After my first 10 mile walk I have done nothing! I walked a bit in San Fran and I told my self that the 30 minute walk-although short-was all hills so I counted it as training!
Maybe this weekend!
Okay - so I'm Blogged challenged. I can't seem to post my own Blog - all I can do is 'comment' - but that won't hold me back.
I finaly bit the bullet (or is that bought the bullet :)) and purchased two pair of new shoes. What a difference they make! I walked 8 miles on Saturday and 10 on Sunday. Voila - no back aches! I also purchased the cutest little pink fanny pack that will hold my Blackberry, ID and credit card, and some lip stuff. I bought a clip on type water bottle that sucks (again I'm saying sucks on the Blog). It bounces around too much so I'll keep looking for something better.
Melissa was right - train with what you're going to use for The walk. I wouldn't have imagined that the water bottle thing wouldn't work.
Are any of you finding that the long walks don't seem so long anymore? Half the time I'm 1/2 way done and don't even remember the first half. No, it's not my age! I just get so lost in my own thoughts! What great therapy this is turning out to be!
